Harvest Time Tips
Please remember this as you are harvesting
Your dry edible bean crop. Take special
care to eliminate any possible contamination
of your dry edible bean loads. If at all possible
designate combines specifically for one crop or
the other. Do not jump back and forth between
crops with the same harvesting equipment.
It is impossible to thoroughly clean the soybeans
from a combine without a complete tear down
of the equipment and then preferably running
small grain through it to flush the
machine completely. We have worked all season
to bring in a safe and healthy crop, please
make every effort to deliver that crop without
contaminants and allergens.

Reminder to all Larson Grain Company Edible Bean Growers:
Roundup or any of that family of chemicals are
NOT TO BE USED AS DESICCANTS on your 2010 drybean crop!
Larson Grain is taking the following measures to ensure our customers that beans from our growers are safe.
1. A Certificate of Conformance (CoC) for each field needs to be completed and signed prior to delivery. This will show your ability to document the chemical(s) you used, their usage rates, and times of application.
2. We will keep a sample of every load on file.
3. We are required to demonstrate traceability of products which means that—should beans be found that exceed FDS limits—we can and will trace it to the source.
4. To ensure that your beans are safe and to maintain your good reputation as a quality grower, do not use roundup for any purpose on your edible beans!
We thank you for your diligence and integrity. The people who buy your beans depend upon you. That includes us at Larson Grain Company.
Our wish for you is that you have an abundant harvest and that you market your beans through Larson Grain.

Dry Bean Harvesting Tips
A safe, smooth, and quality-oriented harvest begins long before we take the harvest machinery to the field. In the past, we have stressed the need for checking knives and windrowers, etc. But with the advent of many new varieties, more advanced machinery, and higher quality standards for edible beans in our modern world, we need to take a more in depth look at preparing for harvest. Quality concerns over the presence of excess stones and dirt balls in product shipped to some of our customers has made us look at the use of straight cutting more of our crop. The use of the straight cutting method in pinto beans has not been ideal in the past because of the field loss incurred due to the growth habit of the plants. With advanced genetics in some of the newer varieties of pintos, we now have the ability to harvest our crop directly with a minimum amount of field loss and thereby eliminate running large amounts of dirt, stones, and excess root structure through our harvest machinery. This method does remove some of the headaches from the harvest procedure, but we still must pay close attention to readying our machinery for the 2005 edible bean harvest. Combines should be checked extensively for sharp and worn metal. Make sure that all pinch points that may cause cracking or checking are repaired. When using a combine with cylinder bars for harvesting, keep an old, well-rounded set around just to use on your edible bean crop. If there is any question that beans will be cracked or checked by dropping from heights, areas where they land should be padded or cushioned.
For those of you who will begin harvesting your edible bean crop by knifing and possibly windrowing, here are some tips to prepare for this years harvest. Give yourself time to get bean knives sharpened, cleaned and well-positioned for optimum performance. Secondly, check windrowers thoroughly and make sure that tires, bearings, canvases, etc. are ready for the field. Growers that use rodweeders should check all points and bearings and replace if necessary. Also check all rods for bends and twists, they need to be straight and well aligned for the machine to operate effectively.
Once we have combines in the field, we want to make sure that cylinder speeds are set at as slow a speed as possible that still allows beans to be cleanly threshed. Run concave clearances at settings that maintain maximum flow and quality. Fans should be run at as high a speed as possible to remove excessive dirt and dockage. Combines should run as full as possible to provide a cushion, which in turn helps thresh more gently. Check to see what we are re-running. Make sure we are not re-running beans needlessly and creating more damage to the finished product. It is essential that we monitor harvest equipment closely throughout the day. As we notice changes in field conditions and weather, we should check combine operations, bean quality, and set machinery accordingly.
If any growers have fields under contract that might be short of contracted pounds, or have been otherwise compromised due to weather events, please contact us so we can verify these facts for our records.
